なぜc()を使ってベクトルを定義するのですか?

疑問点

c は英語ではvectorの略語ではないので、なぜ c() を使ってRでベクトルを定義するのでしょうか?

v1<- c(1,2,3,4,5)

どのように解決するのですか?

Owenの回答は完璧ですが、もう一つ注意すべき点は、c()はベクトル以外も連結できるということです。
